Now that summer is coming to a close and your weekend jaunts to the beach are coming to an end, it is time to start thinking about those DIY projects you put on the summer back burner. Is it time to finally paint that spare bedroom or hang all your summer travel photos? Whatever projects you have in store, now is a good time to take stock of your must-have tools. Chicago Metro Home Inspections has a handy checklist of 15 tools every homeowner should own.

Below are a few of my favorite tools

Torpedo Level

I used to think this was an unnecessary tool, however after installing one too many pictures crooked, I realized a level is a must-have. A level is also critical for wallpaper installation.

Caulking Gun

It is worth investing in a caulking gun when it comes to applying caulk around trim such as baseboards, windows and crown molding. Squeezable caulking tubes are available, but you will save money using a caulking gun in the long run. Fall time is a perfect time to check your home for cracks along your trim. Repairing trim will actually help insulate your home from the winter cold.

Screwdriver Set

Time to stop using your kitchen knife and invest in a screwdriver set that includes flathead and Phillips-head screwdrivers. The set is perfect for removing cover plates when skim coating, painting and wallpapering. Screwdrivers are also useful to have around for replacing ceiling light fixtures and tightening loose odds and ends.

Tape Measure

A tape measure is a home must-have. Buying new furniture? Hanging photos? Installing wallpaper? Replacing shoe molding? All of these projects require a tape measure. Invest in a heavy duty one that will stay rigid when you measure vertically, i.e. you want to avoid the tape measure from falling on your head.

And the most important of them all…

Just have a plunger…no one wants a 3am emergency.
